NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI works at the Federal, and State and local levels to advocate for policies and regulations on a broad range of issues that impact mental health. Among some of the issues: Medicaid and Medicare funding, insurance parity, research, education, Veteran's and children's mental health, housing, reducing disparities and criminalization and more. You can read more on NAMI’s Public Policy Platform to learn about NAMI’s positions on issues such as Stigma & Discrimination, Treatment, Diversion from Justice Involvement, Treatment and Research, among many others.
Unfortunately, at times there are organizations, companies, politicians and individuals that express - often unsavory and insulting - public comments regarding mental health. NAMI simply cannot release a statement in response to each. We do try and ensure the public is properly educated in response to political statements since these are directed at and affect a broad audience of individuals living with a mental health condition. For example, NAMI has released statements in response to public events such as the Parkland School Shooting, and political statements from POTUS. Additionally, NAMI representatives have appeared on televised interviews and radio broadcasts to make our voice heard wherever possible and wherever needed.
