Psychotherapeutic services require a very personal connection with a provider, and it is not uncommon for someone to not “connect” with various providers. The important thing is to find one that you/your loved one trusts and where you feel “heard” by the provider. Keep in mind that it can take some trial-and-error to find the right treatment team.
You may also wish to visit our Mental Health Treatment & Services page where you can read about Psychosocial Treatments and Complementary Health Approaches. In the meantime, you may want to consider the following resources for finding a mental health provider:
- A first option is to reach out to your insurance provider for in-network referrals.
- An additional option is to consult the website of Psychology Today, which features a Find a Therapist. There, you can enter the zip code where you are seeking treatment. The database will then generate a list comprised of individual mental health providers, support groups and treatment facilities. You can then sort the list by numerous factors, among them, insurance, mental health condition, type of therapy, language, etc.
- Similarly, Therapy Den is a website that features a Find a Therapist search function that allows you to search by zip code, specialty and insurance.
In all cases, once you have identified a provider, be sure to verify with your insurance company to confirm coverage.
